An F-16 Pilot and a Petroleum Engineer Have Much in Common IAC’s technology originated when the DOD funded ground-breaking research that led to the development of intelligent associate system software for fighter aircraft. The Pilot’s Associate system demonstrated in the early 1990s was a truly intelligent network of five distributed intelligent agents, all designed to help the pilot fly, fight and survive. An F-16 fighter pilot and a petroleum engineer have more in common than you might imagine. Today’s oil patch is not simple as it once was. Sensors are everywhere and data rates are high. IAC’s intelligent agents do for the oil patch what the Pilot’s Associate did for combat pilots. Much like the systems in the Pilot's Associate, IAC’s agents can monitor continuous data streams tirelessly and fuse this information from periodically gathered data such as well tests. Then, using either predictions from models or expert knowledge bases, IAC agents can diagnose problems and recommend corrective action even when the data sets are too large for people to continuously review. In contrast to many conventional applications, IAC’s agents are transparent so that users can “see what the agent is thinking.” Agents explain their diagnoses and provide data relevant to a problem, all presented in a format consistent with a trained expert’s mental model.
